Neighbors “a knock from the past”

Three days after the morning in the hallway, life between Kelly and Jake had settled into a rhythm that felt almost too good to question. Most evenings ended the same way. Cooking in one apartment or the other. Laughing about something random. Falling asleep on opposite ends of the couch… only to wake up much closer. The hallway between 4A and 4B had basically become their shared living room. Jake would knock twice. Kelly would open the door with a smile. It had become routine. Comfortable. And maybe a little dangerous because both of them were starting to realize how quickly they were falling into something real. That Thursday evening Kelly came home later than usual. She had kicked off her shoes and barely dropped her purse when there was a knock on the door. Two knocks. But they weren’t Jake’s knocks. Jake always knocked lightly. Playfully. This knock was heavier. More certain. Kelly frowned slightly and walked to the door. When she opened it… Her smile disappeared. Standing in the hallway was a man she hadn’t seen in almost a year. “Hey, Kel.” Her stomach dropped. “Marvin?” Marvin leaned casually against the doorframe like he had every right to be there. “Long time.” Kelly stood frozen for a moment. Marvin was her ex. Not just any ex. The one who had left things messy. The one she had spent months trying not to think about. “What are you doing here?” she asked quietly. Marvin shrugged. “I was in the city.” He looked past her shoulder into the apartment. “Thought I’d stop by.” Kelly crossed her arms. “You don’t even live in this state anymore.” “True.” He smiled slightly. “But I still know where you live.” Something about the way he said it made her uneasy. Kelly stepped halfway into the hallway, closing the door behind her slightly. “What do you want, Marvin?” Marvin studied her face for a moment. “You look good.” Kelly didn’t respond. “So do you,” he added casually. Still nothing. Finally Marvin sighed. “Alright… I’ll get to the point.” Kelly waited. Marvin rubbed the back of his neck. “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately.” Kelly almost laughed. “That usually means trouble.” Marvin ignored the comment. “I made a mistake leaving the way I did.” Kelly’s jaw tightened. “Marvin…” “Just hear me out.” Kelly looked down the hallway briefly, hoping no one else would step out of their apartment. Especially Jake. Marvin continued. “I thought I wanted something different… a different city… different life.” “And?” “And it turns out none of that felt right without you.” Kelly stared at him, disbelief written all over her face. “You drove three states to tell me that?” Marvin nodded slowly. “Yeah.” Kelly shook her head. “You can’t just show up like this after disappearing for a year.” Marvin looked down the hallway. “So there’s someone else now?” Kelly hesitated. Not because she didn’t know the answer. But because saying it out loud suddenly made everything feel very real. Marvin noticed the pause. “That’s a yes.” Kelly sighed. “It’s complicated.” Marvin laughed quietly. “Complicated usually means it’s not serious.” Before Kelly could respond… Another door opened. Apartment 4A. Jake stepped out holding his phone. He had been about to text Kelly when he heard voices in the hallway. He looked up. And immediately sensed the tension. Kelly standing stiffly near her door. A stranger standing a little too close. Jake walked over slowly. “Hey,” he said to Kelly. She looked relieved the moment she saw him. “Jake…” Marvin looked between them. Jake extended his hand calmly. “I’m Jake.” Marvin shook it. “Marvin.” The handshake lasted just a second longer than necessary. Jake looked at Kelly. “You okay?” Kelly nodded. “Yeah.” Marvin folded his arms slightly. “So this is the neighbor?” Jake glanced at him. “Across the hall.” Marvin smirked. “Convenient.” Jake didn’t react. But Kelly noticed the subtle shift in his posture. Jake looked back at her. “You want me to give you two a minute?” Kelly immediately shook her head. “No.” Marvin raised an eyebrow. “Wow.” Kelly exhaled slowly. “Marvin… you can’t just show up here and expect things to go back to how they were.” Marvin looked between her and Jake again. “So they changed that fast?” Kelly didn’t answer. Jake spoke calmly. “Look man, I don’t know the history here.” Marvin chuckled. “That’s obvious.” Jake ignored the comment. “But showing up unannounced like this probably isn’t the best move.” Marvin looked amused now. “You her boyfriend or something?” Jake glanced at Kelly before answering. “We’re figuring things out.” Kelly felt her chest warm slightly hearing that. Marvin shook his head. “Interesting.” He stepped back slightly from the door. “Well Kelly… looks like you moved on faster than I expected.” Kelly looked at him firmly now. “You left.” Marvin held her gaze for a moment. Then nodded slowly. “Fair point.” He turned and started walking toward the elevator. But before the doors opened, he looked back one last time. “Just remember something,” he said calmly. “People from your past don’t disappear that easily.” Then the elevator doors closed. The hallway went quiet again. Kelly let out a long breath she didn’t realize she was holding. Jake looked at her gently. “You alright?” Kelly nodded slowly. “Yeah… I think so.” Jake leaned against the wall beside her. “Ex?” “Yeah.” Jake nodded. “Well… he definitely didn’t like me.” Kelly laughed softly. “He didn’t like anyone.” Jake studied her face carefully. “You sure you’re okay?” Kelly looked at him. Really looked at him. And suddenly realized something. Marvin showing up didn’t confuse her feelings. It clarified them. Kelly stepped closer to Jake. “Yeah,” she said softly. “I’m okay.” Jake relaxed slightly. “Good.” Kelly smiled. “Because now I know something for sure.” Jake tilted his head. “What’s that?” Kelly reached for his hand. “That I’m exactly where I want to be.” Jake squeezed her hand gently. “Good answer.” And as the hallway returned to its usual quiet calm… Neither of them realized that Marvin’s sudden return might not be the last complication their relationship would face. But for now… Jake and Kelly stood together in the same place where their story had started. And neither of them planned on letting the past ruin what they were building.
