Neighbors pt2
The night it happened started like most of their nights did. Late. Quiet. And somehow both of them still awake. Kelly had just finished washing dishes when her phone buzzed on the counter. Jake.. Random question… have you ever been on the roof of this building? Kelly wiped her hands on a towel. Kelly.. No… why? Three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Then appeared again. Jake.. I just found the door tonight when I took the trash out. The view is actually crazy. Kelly walked toward the window of her apartment and looked out at the city lights glowing against the night sky. Chicago after midnight had its own kind of beauty quieter, calmer, like the city was finally exhaling. Her phone buzzed again. Jake.. You should come see it. Kelly stared at the message for a moment, feeling that familiar flutter in her chest she’d started getting whenever Jake invited her somewhere. It was simple. But it never felt casual. She grabbed a hoodie. Kelly.. Give me five minutes. The hallway outside their apartments was quiet. Jake was already standing there leaning against the wall when Kelly stepped out of 4B. He looked up and smiled. And Kelly immediately noticed something different. Jake had changed out of his hoodie into a black t-shirt and jeans. “You got dressed?” she teased. Jake shrugged. “What if this rooftop moment becomes a core memory?” Kelly laughed. “Lead the way then.” The stairwell echoed softly as they climbed. Four flights up. Then another half flight to a door that looked like it hadn’t been opened in years. Jake pushed it slowly. The door creaked open. And suddenly the city stretched out in every direction. Lights. Buildings. The distant glow of traffic. A soft breeze drifted across the rooftop, cool against the warm summer air. Kelly stepped out slowly. “Oh wow…” Jake watched her reaction more than the view. “Told you,” he said quietly. She walked to the edge, resting her arms on the short railing. “You can see the whole skyline from here.” Jake stepped beside her. The city lights reflected faintly in her eyes. For a moment neither of them spoke. Just the wind. And the quiet hum of the city below. Kelly glanced sideways at him. “You’ve been holding out on me.” Jake smirked. “I literally found it tonight.” “Still counts.” He leaned his elbows on the railing next to hers. “You know what’s funny?” “What?” “We’ve spent hours talking… and we live like twenty feet apart.” Kelly laughed softly. “Yeah… that is kind of ridiculous.” Jake looked over at her. “Not ridiculous.” “Then what?” “Just… different.” Kelly turned toward him slightly. “Different how?” Jake hesitated for the first time since she’d met him. Then he said quietly, “I don’t usually feel this comfortable with someone this fast.” The honesty in his voice caught her off guard. Kelly looked down at the lights of the street below. “Yeah… me neither.” The wind picked up slightly, brushing strands of her hair across her face. Without thinking, Jake reached up and gently moved it away from her eyes. His fingers barely touched her cheek. But the moment lingered. Kelly looked up at him. And suddenly the air between them felt charged. The kind of silence that says more than words ever could. Jake’s voice softened. “You ever notice something?” “What?” “When we’re talking… it feels like time disappears.” Kelly smiled faintly. “I thought that was just me.” They both laughed quietly, but neither of them moved away. The space between them had grown smaller. Close enough now that Kelly could feel the warmth of him beside her despite the cool breeze. Jake looked at her for a long moment. Not rushed. Not nervous. Just certain. “Kelly…” “Yeah?” “You ever think about… how weird it is that we met because of a hallway?” Kelly tilted her head. “And pasta,” she added. Jake laughed. “Right. Pasta.” Then his expression softened again. “But I’m glad we did.” The way he said it made Kelly’s heart beat just a little faster. “Me too,” she admitted. The wind brushed across the rooftop again. Kelly’s hoodie shifted slightly, and Jake instinctively reached out, lightly holding the sleeve near her wrist. Not pulling. Just holding it there. Their eyes met again. Closer now. Neither of them pretending not to notice anymore. Kelly spoke softly. “You’re thinking about it too, aren’t you?” Jake smiled a little. “Yeah.” “Good.” The distance between them disappeared slowly. Jake lifted his hand from her sleeve and gently rested it along her jaw. Kelly didn’t step back. Didn’t hesitate. The first kiss wasn’t rushed or dramatic. It was slow. Warm. And filled with all the quiet tension that had been building through late night messages, shared meals, and hallway conversations. When they pulled back, both of them laughed softly in disbelief. Jake shook his head. “So… rooftop was a good idea.” Kelly leaned against the railing again, smiling. “Very good idea.” Jake stood beside her, their shoulders touching now. Neither of them trying to create space anymore. Below them the city lights kept glowing. Cars moved through the streets. Life kept going. But on that quiet rooftop, two neighbors who had started with hallway small talk and late night messages had just crossed into something undeniable. And both of them knew… Things between them were about to get a lot more interesting.
