Neighbors “what almost slipped away”

For the next two days after Marvin showed up, the building hallway felt… different. Not tense. Just thoughtful. Kelly tried to go back to normal work, errands, her usual routine but every now and then Marvin’s words echoed in her mind. People from your past don’t disappear that easily. She hated that he had managed to plant that thought there. But what she noticed even more was something else. Jake hadn’t pulled away. If anything, he had become even more present. He texted her good morning. He checked in during the day. And every night there was still that familiar knock on her door. Two soft taps. Like clockwork. Saturday night came with a calm, quiet feeling in the building. Kelly had just finished cooking when she heard the knock. She smiled immediately. “Come in,” she called. Jake walked in holding a small paper bag. “Dessert delivery,” he said. Kelly laughed. “You’re spoiling me now.” Jake shrugged. “Don’t get used to it.” They moved around the kitchen together the way they had gotten used to doing naturally, comfortably, bumping shoulders and teasing each other about who was the better cook. But Kelly could tell Jake had something on his mind. Finally she leaned against the counter. “Alright.” Jake looked up. “What?” “You’re thinking about something.” Jake sighed quietly. “Maybe.” Kelly crossed her arms. “Is this about Marvin?” Jake didn’t answer immediately. Which was answer enough. Kelly stepped closer. “You can ask whatever you want, you know.” Jake ran his hand through his hair. “It’s not that I don’t trust you.” “But?” Jake met her eyes. “I just… don’t like the idea of someone from your past showing up and thinking he can just walk back into your life.” Kelly studied him for a moment. “You jealous?” Jake chuckled softly. “A little.” Kelly smiled. “I think that might be the first honest jealous moment you’ve had since we met.” Jake leaned against the counter. “Can you blame me?” Kelly stepped closer until she was standing right in front of him. “No.” Her voice softened. “But you don’t need to worry about Marvin.” Jake looked at her carefully. “You sure about that?” Kelly nodded. “He’s my past.” Jake’s shoulders relaxed slightly. “And what am I?” Kelly didn’t hesitate this time. “You’re my present.” Jake smiled faintly. “I like the sound of that.” Just then There was another knock. But this one wasn’t gentle. It was firm. Kelly’s stomach tightened. Jake looked at her. “Expecting someone?” She slowly walked to the door. When she opened it… Marvin was standing there again. Kelly immediately sighed. “Marvin… seriously?” Marvin held up his hands. “Relax. I’m not here to cause drama.” Jake stepped beside Kelly now. Marvin looked between them. “Actually,” he said calmly, “I just came to apologize.” Kelly blinked. “What?” Marvin nodded. “I shouldn’t have shown up the way I did the other night.” Jake watched him carefully. Marvin continued. “That wasn’t fair to you.” Kelly crossed her arms. “So… what changed?” Marvin shrugged. “I realized something after I left.” “What?” Marvin looked directly at Jake. “You moved on.” Kelly looked surprised. Marvin gave a small nod. “And honestly… you look happy.” Kelly didn’t know what to say. Marcus took a step back toward the elevator. “So that’s it. No more surprise visits.” He gave a small half smile. “Take care of her, man.” Jake nodded. “Plan to.” Marcus looked at Kelly one last time. “Goodbye, Kel.” The elevator doors opened behind him. And just like that He was gone. For real this time. The hallway fell silent again. Kelly leaned her head back against the door for a moment. “Well… that was unexpected.” Jake exhaled slowly. “Yeah.” Kelly looked at him. “You okay?” Jake nodded. “Actually… yeah.” Kelly stepped closer to him. “Why?” Jake smiled slightly. “Because now I don’t feel like I’m competing with your past anymore.” Kelly laughed softly. “You never were.” Jake tilted his head. “No?” Kelly shook her head. “Not even close.” Jake studied her face. “You mean that?” Kelly stepped forward, resting her hands lightly on his chest. “I do.” For a moment neither of them spoke. The quiet apartment suddenly felt warm again. Peaceful again. Jake’s voice dropped slightly. “You know something?” “What?” “That whole situation made me realize something too.” Kelly raised an eyebrow. “What’s that?” Jake brushed his fingers gently along her arm. “That I care about you more than I expected to.” Kelly felt her heart skip slightly. “You’re just realizing that?” Jake smiled. “I’ve been trying to play it cool.” Kelly laughed softly. “You’re terrible at that.” Jake leaned closer. “Yeah… I’m starting to realize that.” The air between them shifted again. That familiar spark. The one that had started on the rooftop… grown in the kitchen… and deepened during the storm. Kelly whispered, “You’re doing that distracting thing again.” Jake’s voice was barely above a whisper now. “And you’re letting me.” Kelly smiled just before their lips met again. This kiss wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t uncertain. It was confident. Warm. The kind of kiss that comes when two people realize they’re not just flirting anymore… they’re choosing each other. Jake pulled her a little closer. Kelly laughed softly against his shoulder. “We’re standing in the kitchen again.” Jake didn’t move away. “Seems to be our spot.” Kelly looked up at him. “Good spot.” Jake rested his forehead gently against hers. “Very good spot.” Outside, the city lights flickered across the windows as night settled in again. And inside apartment 4B… Kelly and Jake realized something at the same time. The small hallway where they first met had started their story. But what they were building now was something much bigger than a neighbor romance. It was becoming real. And neither of them wanted to let it go.
